It seems whenever a character goes over to the other side, they see Delena in a better way, some even wanting them to be together whereas they were absolutely against it when they were alive. You know why this happens?

It happens because when a character dies, they get to see all the sides, they get to see what we see - All the loving private moments between Damon and Elena, all sacrifices Damon makes. They stop seeing things on face-value, not just what is projected.

It frustrates me when people frame Damon as taking advantage of Elena when it comes to the sire bond. I’m not talking about Damon’s history of compelling and abusing women, but specifically with Elena in season four. I see so many people framing his sleeping with her as ‘using the sire bond to his advantage’ or ‘essentially raping her’, and I find this simplification gross and missing a huge part of the story. The point is that Damon is also a victim of circumstance with the sire bond. When he and Elena slept together neither of them knew about it. Damon had no clue that Elena was sired to him and she had no clue that she was sired to him. He had no reason to doubt her ability to consent and they both thought they were just having a lovely, wonderful physical culmination of their feelings for each other and being alive and happy together.

After he found out about the sire bond, Damon made it abundantly clear that he didn’t want to sleep with Elena so long as he thought she was sired and he became distant from her, even flinching away from innocent hugs and face touches. While it undoubtedly affected Elena and her free will more, Damon certainly suffered because of the sire bond and never took advantage of it to get Elena to sleep with him. That people say that is a pretty obvious ignorance of canon facts and is a gross reframing to make Damon a villain in a situation where they were both victims of a tragic circumstance and being unaware of any sire bond.
